Motivational Interviewing in career guidance and coaching

Motivational Interviewing

– using kinaesthetic methods to increase motivation.

As Career advisers/ coaches we often set goals by asking a client where they want to be and to visualise that place. Asking them to physically stand in that place, to be there, feel it, can increase the power of visualisation.

In the photograph the delegates are using stepping stones to walk towards their goal but also to look back and see how they reached it. These stepping stones will become the action plan. Drawing on Motivational Interviewing practice, they are also asked to step into a future where they don’t make that change and to experience the consequences. For some people it is the discomfort of this that motivates them to take positive action.

Thanks to the staff at Jersey Careers Service for allowing me to share the photo.
